In 1983 the Highway City Thrift Store was started as a means to help reach the people of Highway City and the surrounding area by offering low-cost, previously owned items in an atmosphere that helped develop dignity and community. From a very small operation to the current ministry which reaches hundreds of people each year the motto has been the same “Providing second hand merchandise to first rate customers” and “Helping people to help themselves.”
The income produce by the Highway City Thrift Store helps to support the below listed ministries of the store, Highway City Community Development and the Central Unified Schools.
The following churches also support the ministries of the store: Central Community Church, Northwest Church, New Harvest Community, New Covenant and God’s Family Church.
Over the years the store has grown in what it can offer to the community. Look at these ministries:
Job Training – As there are positions available the Highway City Thrift Store offers a six month job training experience for those trying to enter the job market for the first time or are trying to rehabilitate their life. Please call the store manager (275-6677) for the details to this ministry.
Work Program – Food – Work for four hours. Two hours for God and the community and 2 hours for the family and the family receives 2 bags of non-perishable food items.
Work Program – Clothes – Work for four hours. Two hours for God and the community and 2 hours for the family and family receives $15 in clothing. Additional 2 hours earns $10 toward clothing.
Work Program – Furniture – Anything from bedding to large appliances can be earned through work. Hours are dependent upon the cost of the item.
Each family may participate in the work programs up to 4 times each month. A 15 minute orientation must be attended prior to working in the program.
Community Service – The Highway City Thrift Store is a court approved site for people to complete court ordered service for non-violent offenses. In addition we welcome High School students who must meet graduation requirements with community service.

Donations to our “On-Site” Food bank allow us to meet the needs of people through our work programs.

DONATIONS can be delivered to us during store hours (9:00-4:00 Mon-Sat). Additionally, the Highway City Thrift Store picks up donations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Please call to set up a pick-up (275-6677). Your donations are tax-deductible and a receipt is given upon request.
Volunteer Ministry Opportunities:
Positions: Cashiers, Floor Assistants, Warehouse, Truck drivers/helpers, Laundry, Steamers, Food Bank and clerical.
Our Volunteers are from all ages and come in all shapes and sizes.
Some come from our supporting churches as well as other churches.
Some we meet in Bible study and others we meet here as customers.
Some want to serve others while others need people to care about them.
Some want to be part of something bigger and need to feel they make a difference.
What ever your reason for serving we would be blessed to find a place for you.

- Come once a week, every other week or even once a month
- Join us for 3 hours, 4 hours or more
Volunteerism is vital to keeping our costs down so we can funnel as much of our income as possible into the ministries we are called to provide for this community. |
